| Central America’s largest country, Nicaragua, hosts part of the region known as the Mosquitia. Spanning the border between Nicaragua and Honduras, the remote Mosquitia is a vast area that contains intact Caribbean lowland forest. The Nicaraguan part of the region is also home to Miskito, Rama, and Sumo indigenous groups as well as Garífuna communities. |

Today, food products account for more than half of Nicaragua’s exports. Consequently more land has been cleared for agricultural purposes than in any of its Central American neighbors, resulting in deforestation, soil erosion, water pollution, and other related threats to natural areas. The Parks in Peril program, together with its Nicaraguan partners, is working to protect the rich cultural and biological diversity in the Mosquitia.
