| The Parks in Peril Program (PiP) has focused its Honduran efforts in the area in Central America known as the Mosquitia. The Mosquitia, covering the northeastern portions of Honduras and Nicaragua, is known for its outstanding biodiversity. The area is defined by four ecoregions, including the most extensive and least degraded extension of mangroves in Central America, the only global example of Miskito pine forest, and the largest continuous tract of Central American moist forest in the region. Due to its remoteness and inaccessibly, Mosquitia was undisturbed for many years. In recent years, however, the area has seen increasing land acquisition pressures and exploitation of natural resources. |
